Reading Building on our Inferring, and Asking Questions skills, we have been working on DETERMINING IMPORTANCE. This is a very important skill in all parts of our lives: reading for meaning, finding main idea, what to spend our budget on, where to go on vacation, what type of couch we want, etc. In class, we are working on summarizing and finding main idea. We sorted my backpack items based on where I was intending to go, we learned that we need to "drain" out the unimportant details and just save the pasta (most important bits).
Writing In library students are working on researching a particular explorer (5th grade will research US History explorers, 4th grade will research WA state explorers). Their new found skill in DETERMINING IMPORTANCE will aid them in this. They will be creating a poster with well-written informative paragraphs. We are also writing about something we are an expert on. We have written long about what we know. Next week we will add in some research to beef up our expository piece. You can look forward to their finished piece around report card time.
Math January brings fractions. We are exploring fractions in many ways: using money, geometrical shapes on a grid, clock/time, ordering on a number line, adding/subtracting/multiplying and dividing, and decomposing. It's an exciting month in Math.
Science The 5th and 4th graders are working on a Simple Machine Valentines container project. This project for the 4th graders is a pared down version of the 5th grade project. 5th Graders have begun presenting their projects. I am so pleased with their boxes! Nice job! I can't wait to see what the 4th graders have come up with. If you are still working on this, remember, 4th grade projects are DUE WEDNESDAY the 11th. We will be presenting on Thursday 1:10-2:10.
Spelling Keep studying those spelling words! You will continue to see many of them resurface again. I will try to send the spelling list out at the beginning of the week for practice.
