Reading The name of the game is comprehension. We are extending our discussion of real reading and metacognition to include using things like Thinking Stems to help us make connections and ask questions while reading to better comprehend the text. Thinking Stems are thought beginnings such as: I wonder..., I think..., I noticed..., etc. We used these stems on Wordless Picture books to really open up that thought process. It's amazing what thinks you can think when you think about it! We are also diving into theme. Talk with your student about the theme of the books they are reading, or movies/shows they are watching. Help them to use evidence from the text or media to support why they think it's a particular theme.
Writing Students are taking on the teaching role. They are proving to be experts on all sorts of things, from dogs to motocross. We're headed into some informational writing using facts and details.
Math Yeah! Your work with your student is paying off! Students are progressing through their math facts. Please continue to work with them so we can meet our goal of getting everyone through their multiplication facts by December. We are working with factors and multiples, using arrays and area models to solve multiplication problems, converting fractions to decimals, reducing fractions, and solving multi-step word problems.
Spelling Keep studying those spelling words! You will continue to see many of them resurface again. Pay attention to those homophones: their, they're, there and it's, its - when to use them!
