Reading Your children are learning a whole new vocabulary! Wonderful words like Metacognition (thinking about our thinking) and Schema (our knowledge and experience). We use both of those things, and many more things to help us understand what we read in all aspects of our lives. We are working hard on reading with purpose and comprehension, using our schema to build knowledge and make connections. We are using poetry right now to learn about tone, author's purpose, figurative language, theme and summarizing. Ask your kids what the elements of poetry are.
Writing We are using what we know about the elements of poetry (rhythm, rhyme, repetition, alliteration, similes, metaphors) to write poetry. I hope your enjoyed your Thanksgiving acrostic poem and artwork.
Math Before Thanksgiving break we delved into factors and multiples. We are now diving into equivalent fractions and decimals, and adding fractions with like and unlike denominators. A great way to learn fractions is by cooking and money! Get your kids into the kitchen and let them read and follow a recipe. KEEP PRACTICING THOSE MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION FACTS!
Spelling We are learning about homophones, homographs and contractions. Have your student explain the difference and give some examples. Keep studying those spelling words! You will continue to see many of them resurface again. Pay attention to those homophones: their, they're, there and it's, its - when to use them!
